Study Description

Brief Summary

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the implementation of a pilot mentorship program for individuals with ASD implemented by a community group. Specific aims include conducting interviews and focus groups with and collecting survey information from individuals with ASD, family members, and mentorship program staff. Information from these interviews and questionnaires will be used to inform further development of the mentoring program for individuals with ASD.

Experimental: Mentoring Program

Behavioral: Mentoring Program
UMN staff will engage participants, parents, and program staff in pre-, mid-, and post-program interviews, focus groups, and surveys. Furthermore, UMN staff will have access to program applications completed by participants and will receive weekly information from program staff regarding attendance and participant ratings of the weekly meetings

  1. Number of sessions attended [within 30 days of the intervention end]

    Median count of completed visits

  2. Program Satisfaction Scale ratings [within 30 days of the intervention end]

    Average satisfaction score; the scale is 1-5 and higher scores are better

  3. Intervention acceptability mean scores [within 30 days of the intervention end]

    Average acceptability score; range = 1-7; higher scores are better

  4. Intervention feasibility mean scores [within 30 days of the intervention end]

    Average program feasibility score; range = 1-7; higher scores are better

  5. Mentoring relationship quality ratings [within 30 days of the intervention end]

    Average relationship rating; range = 1-5; higher scores are better

  6. Child Behavior Checklist Internalizing behavior t-scores [change from pre-intervention (within 30 days of intervention start) to post-intervention (within 30 days of intervention end)]

    Average t-score; lower scores are better

  7. Child Behavior Checklist externalizing t-scores [change from pre-intervention (within 30 days of intervention start) to post-intervention (within 30 days of intervention end)]

14 Years and Older

Accepts Healthy Volunteers:
No
Inclusion Criteria:
  • Diagnosis of ASD, or parent of a child with ASD, or professionals who with with individuals diagnosed with ASD

  • Age 14-35

  • Participants, participants' parents, or staff in the mentoring program.

  • Participants must have fluent language and will speak and understand English and/or Spanish fluently.

  • Participants must be able to commit to providing evaluation data.

Exclusion Criteria:
  • Not participants in the mentoring program, parents of participants in the mentoring program, or mentoring program staff.

  • Do not have fluent language, and if they do not speak and understand English and/or Spanish.

  • Have an intellectual disability (IQ under 70)
